Artist Statement
My work conveys the silent internal struggles of young women in contemporary society. I'm concerned with the voiceless personal and collective moments of disappointment, fear and trauma that go unrecognized. For example, what thoughts and feelings are experienced by a woman who walks home alone at night? I explore the territory women share but do not express. I believe this is an important and sacred space that needs to be held and examined instead of dismissed. These images also reveal the heavy stillness of being torn between biting your tongue and trying to find a way to speak.
The use of black and white depicts the dichotomous nature of the messages conveyed to women. The high contrast is used to create a sense of power and presence. I hope my work resonates with you.
I earned my BA in Visual Art from Seattle University. Currently I'm finishing my MA in Psychology, Mental Health Counseling and Art Therapy at Antioch University Seattle. I've shown my work at the Vera Project, the Hideout and the Rosebud as well as the first Thursday Pioneer Square art walk.
